Stories from the record
Many lives before the forest
The area served as royal hunting ground, a water-supply site from 1908, and later a racecourse and golf course. Today's park is not untouched woodland; several urban uses lie behind its landscape.
Choosing a park over development
In 2002, Seoul decided to create a major park instead of pursuing development at Ttukseom. Seoul Forest opened in 2005. Comparing its edges with surrounding Seongsu reveals how choices about land shape everyday life.
A garden continues to grow
Citizen participation and sponsorship added gardens over time. A park is not finished forever on opening day: it grows through maintenance and change. Revisit a small garden in another season to see that process.
